normally $30, clearance for $8. IF quality matches original price, thinking it would serve well...vaughn brand builders hatchet.

thoughts?

Vaughn makes good steel. Not fancy, but well worth their asking price.
Got one of the Vaughn sounding hatchets a while back- think Nessmuk size mini hatchet, but single bit- and it serves nicely for its weight.

That is a good price, and you can mod it all you want with a clear conscience.

Thanks Grey, I'll grab a couple. Any suggestions for mods (kinda new here)?

Here you go brother, a thread I posted about one I modded for myself: http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49513

I like working with those, they're a good starting point. I just finished one for a Christmas present for my nephew, and I'm working on another one for a giveaway. Buy one (or several), modify them, and have fun!

Thanks Looker, that is awesome...I believe I'll have to pattern one of mine after yours :)

I went back and bought all they had left (4). They were $7.93 each. Now I have a total of 6 to play with...well technically one is my wife's :)

As soon as my wife gets home with the camera I will show you some pics of the one I did for my nephew. I think it turned out a lot better than mine! I hope you enjoy modding them as much as I have. I am going to go over and check my local Home Depot tomorrow and see if the price is the same.

I have been eyeing those Vaughn mini tree sounding hatchets from an arborist site...they look promising.

8 oz. Head axe is perfect for “sounding” trees. Foresters like the compact size (10" long, 2-1/4" blade) for carrying in vest or jacket pocket. Excellent, general purpose axe. Vinyl sheath included.

Ok, I'm a little late with the pics! Here's the one I did for my nephew: http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?p=943903#post943903

I've looked at a couple of HD for them but could not find any. Did they have them in the tool area or somewhere else?

By the way guys I really like those mods. I was thinking about buying a wetterlings or GB but this has me thinking differently now.

Yup, by the hammers. If yours doesn't have them, they are probably sold out. They seem to be going fast.
