I came across this idea on line last night. Here is a quick google overview, copied off google:

The barchino divergente (divergent board/small boat) is an ancient, traditional fishing method with "millennial" roots, particularly associated with Italian coastal fishing, including areas like Sicily. It is a form of artisanal, slow-trolling used to catch predator fish from the shore or a small boat.
  • Ancient Origins: The technique is described as having very old, traditional, or millennial origins.
  • Regional Italian Roots: It is deeply embedded in Italian fishing culture, with various regional dialectal names, including: Vanco, vanchiteddu, spigolara, scannetto, slittino, tape, and banquet.
  • Purpose: Traditionally designed to allow a shore angler to "troll" lures far from the bank without a boat, acting as a "divergent" force that moves away from the angler as they walk along the beach.
  • Construction: Historically made of wood with stainless steel accessories, it functions as a hydrodynamic, stable, and simple device for fishing for species like sea bass, leerfish, and amberjack.
  • Professional/Artisanal Use: Beyond recreational use, it has been used by professional fishermen to catch baitfish, particularly on days when weather makes traditional boat fishing impossible.
The device works by creating a divergent trajectory, constantly turning away from the shore, and it is often used by walking along the coast with the line in hand.

I developed an ADHD hyperfocus on this and next thing I am at the hardware store...

... and came home with this"

10 min later..it looked like this:

Now it looks like this:

I hope to build a collapsible version of this:

I’ve done something along that idea rigging a balloon at the end of a line and letting the wind blow it away into deeper water. You have to pick a spot with the wind at your back so being flexible is a key part of it. If there’s a weed line past your casting range you can fish the edge of it from shore. I rig up a sucker minnow and fish for northerns on it, a drop line twenty feet from the balloon lets you manage where you are fishing and gets it down from the surface.

Thats cool.. how does it work in rough water? I cannot Legally use that in the lakes here but might make one up for 'research' processes

Glenn
Never used one in rough waters. But probably works just fine.
Mine are home made, just some board, copper pipe (bottom) and some heavy wire. Hinged to make it more portable.
And I`ve never used lures on the line, only flies (6 of them), allthough I know someone using spinners with their "Oter".
A picture of mine.

I used to use a plastic bin liner. Drag a longline out 200m Shoot it with a .223 when it was time to retrieve it. Cover the holes with tape and send it out again lol

That’s one idea I hadn’t heard of. Probably not ideal for our lakes and rivers here skipping bullets on them. Your ocean nearby is something I would love to have.
Yes this was in the ocean, the nearest land that way is Sth America... (there were no boats between myself and the horizon!)

Finished it last night..

Had great plans to go out and use it at dawn, but this week has cooked me emotionally and I could not get out of bed. I will try this evening or tomorrow morn

So I went out and it worked!
It sits at a little over 45 degrees behind me so with 80yd of line it sits about 60 yards out or so
It is a bit 'tippy' in the waves with the outside board lifting out of the water a bit, I will make some 1/2" diameter lead slugs and rill holes to add them to reduce this issue

I did not get fish but can see the potential, many of my local beaches are surf beaches but I can think of 1 or 2 that might work, especially on cold days where there are no swimmers
