Buck Fynn on Bush Bumming, Boondoggling, and other Banter...

I headed up the road toward Hell's Backbone where I camped last year in November and again in March. I am glad I had a chance to see Hell's Backbone last tear. Snow made the road impassable on this trip

I decided against camping in my old spot. Active logging was going on a half mile below where I previously camped.

Some of the vegetation in the area

The juniper tree was 2 feet at the butt.

A twisted tree from the wind. A lot of them have unique shapes.

A an old weathered pinyon pine tree.

Plenty of dead trees for firewood in the area. Some of the camp spots have no fire signs. But rock fire rings are all over the place l.

The first night I camp on this side of the towers

The next two night I went across the highway and camped the other side of the towers.

Does any one have any idea what purpose they serve?

My cell reception was two bars or less the first night, almost unusable. The next two nights I was getting between two and four bars. It is amazing how much difference a quarter of a man or can make for cell reception.

Escalante doesn't have trash pickup service. The residents haul their garbage to the bins.

The bins are in a big horseshoe shape.

There is almost no trash or litter on the outskirts of town. I can't help to think the availability to easily dispose of garbage helps keep the area cleaner.

Have you ever have one of those days where it wasn't really a bad day, but nothing went right? Well yesterday was that day.

I was camped 10 miles out from Escalante. I drove into town to get a back country camp permit for the Cottonwood Canyon area. The Escalante Grand Staircase visitor center was closed. So it was a no go.

I go a gas station and my card didn't work. I got the infamous go see cashier message. So screw that. I'll go to the other gas station in town.

My card worked, no problem, at the next gas station . So I thought while I was there I would get a cup of coffee. They had one of those thermos things you pump. I got a half a cup, then it ran out. The gal was nice enough and made another batch.

But what a coincidence of annoying little things to all happen at once.

I remembered when you camped there last year. Did you take any pictures your old camp?

I passed through two tunnels, a long one and a short one. Pics of the short one.

The long tunnel is pretty cool. About the time you think you are at the end, you see a window of light, and then another, and another. I really liked Zion. A lot of people were there when we went. Parking was a hassle. The hikes were awesome.
