Different Types of Paracord

When my son was younger he was briefly interested in making paracord bracelets and we bought several different kinds from Amazon.

He did manage to sell a few at school.

He made me this one and I specifically had him use paracord with the reflective highlights in it.

It shows up a little better in this photo.

If you are looking for more colors than what 5Col supply carries, check out Atwood Rope (atwoodrope.com) They are a US Government contractor for paracord and have retail sales. They also make and carry a multitude of different cordage products including some of the best rappelling rope I've used. Their grab-boxes of odds and ends (paracord and others) are phenomenal!
When I was Camp Director at the Boy Scout camp, I dealt with them directly and they are good people. Based in Canal Winchester and Millersport, Ohio.

I went looking for Paracord and once again was surprised to see how many different varieties there are now.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Paracord&crid=371ZV4D5Z1OO4&sprefix=paracord,aps,287&ref=nb_sb_noss_1&tag=bcusa00-20

Suggestions? Anyone use any of these?

I like the "Tough-Grid" brand. Their's is 100% mil-spec 550 and they even have a 750 lbs.

If you're using the cord for simple crafts or just standard cordage... I don't think it matters what you choose.

But, if you want that extra security in actual, 550lb paracord, it needs to be mil-spec minimum. That's 7 inner strands that each have 3 smaller strands wound together.

The cheaper stuff might not have a full 7 strands and even if it does, the inner strands are usually only 2 twisted together. There's a big difference in outer sheath quality too.

There is real paracord and a lot of "paracord" being sold now. The " i put because there is a lot of stuff sold as paracord that isn't.
Sgt. Knots on amazon is another good dealer of usa made stuff including real paracord

I use 550 paracord for the grip and lanyard on yucca hiking sticks that I make. It makes a good looking indestructible grip. I "gut" it, that is I pull all the inner strings out of it and just use the outer sheath. This makes it lay flat on the the wood, so it's a more comfortable and secure grip. There are many colors and patterns available on ebay vendors like Paracord Planet. Atwood makes some good stuff too. I love the names pf their colors... virus, decay, biosludge, undead, etc.

Lot's of variety in Paracord today I have bought different colors in the past but I always keep a spool of OD green around it is my go to color. I got 50ft of the Battle Cord last spring and I like using it for making lanyard's I use 550 for the Cobra weave on top and the battle cord they are the most comfortable lanyard/sling I have made.20250313_174658.jpg

Twisted or braided?

I have both. Right now packing twisted because I think it's slightly more versatile.... but braided is nice too and doesn't come apart on you.

Some guys complain about the twisted giving them problems with knots.... I don't think I've ever experienced this issue that bad. The twisted seems to "lock" into itself better? Anyone else feel this way?

My dad uses twisted out on the ocean and never complains. He loves it.

Did I see somewhere that someone was making Paracord that had fishing line in it with the white cords?

Or did I see that when I was in dreamland?

Callawegian STITCHERY

They make all kinds now. Stuff you can start fires with... I think there's that Titan "SurvivorCord" that has the fishing line and other things.
