(E) Student Practice for Whipping rope and Tools

I bought this microcord a while back to whip some rope ends.

First, I whipped my shoelace, which was starting to unravel. I'd melted it as a stop-gap, but I wasn't able to easily thread it through its eye until the whipping gave it a little backbone.

Then, I took my hobo fishing rod and carved a shallow indentation around the handle to hold the microcord. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, but it's soft as heck.

Finally, I whipped the handle to give it a better grip when wet.

Until doing the braided man made cordage and ridge line lessons I had never whipped anything. I had only ever seen it done in person once. First time doing it was on my original ridge line. Three strand braided paracord whipped with thread. IMG_2473.jpeg
I had to redo it after I spliced in some extra paracord to increase the length of my ridge line.

For the whipped tool handle I chose my bushcraft knife and some paracord. Instead of cutting the end I put an alpine butterfly knot on it to give it a loop.

Kept forgetting to take pictures when I did this, not today!

This is officially my first Bushclass lesson. Needed to learn this in order to start with my basic knots and rope work! I tie my own bucktails for fishing so had some waxed nylon thread for whipping and used some suede lace I had laying around to do the handle on my hori. I wasn’t sure if it would work as the suede isn’t very slick but it pulled through fine and made a great improvement to the handle98AEACD1-82DA-482D-ACBB-5DA222EEB209.jpegD6EDAA84-D3F4-4363-9FCB-2AAF47317A39.jpeg82057EB1-A4B4-42F1-ACAF-D6D31301ADD5.jpeg

I've been working with natural ropes lately, and whipping is almost a necessity when you cut one. I use hemp twine for Manila and sisal rope.

Then I did some "perfect whipping" with jute on a cold steel shovel. Put some beeswax over it and melted in with a hair dryer for tack and fluff management. Also an emergency tinder.

"Perfect whipping" is very similar, but you cross the ends, and whip with the center section of cord, pulling the ends to finish it off. A little easier for long sections, and doesn't leave a bump, just a long 'seam'.

My submission for whipping rope and tools. I didn’t have a rope, so I used paracord in its place. I used jute to whip with. My tool is a homemade awl that I use for holding my wood carvings as they are dipped into a container of oil and hand rubbed to a final finish.

Here is my submission for whipping rope and a tool. Used 18# bankline for whipping a tool handle and waxed jute for whipping the splices on a commando rope.

After trimming the ends off the Commando Rope, I got perverse pleasure in saving the cutoffs for making tinder....

If you zoom in, you'll see I used a French whip, #36 Bank line on my cruiser axe.View attachment 2204478View attachment 2204479

FYI, from the lesson requirements:

Alright the student practice it to whip the end of a rope and do a whipping on a too handle of your choice.
