Favorite Old School 1970s-1980s Wrestler?


Never watched much wrestling as it was so freakishly faked but I once saw Skandar Akbar hold back a large car with its tires smoking while his back was against a brick wall. No room for error there. Our town has the Hall of Fame for those old wrestlers, I’ve not yet visited it and probably won’t. Oh yeah, I remember Dr. X who would tap his foot like he was loading something in the toe and then kick someone lol what a crock of junk.
 
I grew up in West Tennessee. We all watched wrestling. It was CWA wrestling was around here and Lawler was King. We loved Jerry "The King" Lawler. There was so many that stopped in this area before they became famous. The Rock, Mankind, Macho Man and others. They would get there start in Memphis CWA. Jimmy Hart was always bringing in somebody new to take out Lawler. Jimmy Hart was so mean. One time my brother went to a live show and met him. He was just a kid but hated Jimmy. He walked up and kicked him in the leg. Ha ha good times. Also during that time I was a Hulkamaniac. I loved Hulk Hogan. I watched WWF back in the day ,when I was a kid. I remember when Hogan lost the belt to Andre the Giant. Ted Dibiase put a fake referee in and he fast counted and Hulk lost. I was so upset, I got sick and threw up. I slept on the couch that night. Mom said it was something I ate but I knew what it was. Was Hulkamania over ? It was a great story line. Great times growing up watching wrestling. I still watch it sometimes. I'm not into it like I was.
 
My dad was in charge of the local National Guard armory. In the 60's and 70's wrestling was a frequent event. We would set up the chairs after the ring was put together, and show people to their seats. The good and bad guys would "beat the crap" out of each other and the crowd would go home. We'd clean up, and the wrestlers good and bad would get in their Cadillacs together and go back to Tampa. Good times.
 
I was a child, that was my excuse. Back then it was hulk the racist Hogan. Now, I love macho man in retrospect. The man would just get in front of a camera and wax cocaine poetic about absolute gibberish. Love it!
 
One of my grandmas favorite storys was about the time they met D I c k the Bruiser.My grandpa brought my grandma with him on a business trip so he could take her out for dinner and there was a guy in the restaurant that was giving the waitress a hard time.My grandpa saw him grab the waitresses arm so he walked over to his table and grabbed the guy by the arm the same way he grabbed the waitress, he said it felt like he grabbed ahold of a telephone pole, he instantly knew he messed up, it was D I c k the Bruiser but luckily D I c k laughed it off.

That story reminds me of Randy Savages sloppy steak story lol

I too started watching WWF in the late 60's, and off and on into the 70's or longer, it was great entertainment! The very young Hulk was always A favorite, but I could not pick The One favorite, as there were a lot of great actors I mean, Wrestlers. I attended one match in the early times, and it was big with several of the top Villains. I can't for the life of me remember the names now, I think it was a Russian guy, got thrown out of the ring, and chased around the outside of it. Finally taken down and one of the guys had a prosthetic leg, which got torn off and then he was beat with it as he hobbled around holding himself up with the crowd barricades. It was HILARIOUS! I'm sad I don't remember the names now though...
There were so many great matches, and Talent. The two guys that started the NWO were great, and quite a few of the "managers" too- was it Paul, the mortician? And when the Mexican Pro Wrestlers came into the picture, they were SO impressive with all their flying. It hurts just thinking about it! It was definitely a sad day last year when we lost the Hulk. RIP.
 
Terry Funk and Fritz von Erich . Also Stan Hansen, who spent most of his career in Japan as a megastar there .

My dad used to give me hell about watching fake wrestling , until I asked him if he thought there really was a marshal named Matt Dillon. Sure it’s fake, but it was (past tense) entertaining in the pre WWE days . Brutal as hell also . If you don’t think so go watch the Hell in a Cell match between Undertaker and Mick Foley. How Foley isn’t actually dead is beyond me . Stan Hansen and Van Vader once had a match in which Hansen literally knocked Vaders eye out of its socket and he pushed it back in and kept wrestling . It’s on video and you can see him shove the eye back in. Fake , yeah. Tough as hell , you better believe it .

I will still scroll through YT videos and listen to stories by the old wrestlers about one another . There are a ton of them, including when Andre the Giant was on an airplane and had to take an Andre sized dump and couldn’t fit into the airplane restroom. Stan Hansen has some great interviews . Lots of great stories on Harley Race and Haku .

If you’ve never seen the Jake Roberts interview on Joe Rogan about the Macho Man cobra match it is hilarious. Forewarned , being Joe Rogan and Jake Roberts there are lots of F bombs , which is why I don’t put a direct link up . Someone will have to do a little work to watch it, but it is worth it .

You must be mistaking me for someone else, friend! ;) I have the trilogy in Blu-Ray and have watched them a quarter-bazillion times. (I would have said "a bazillion times" but I don't want to be accused of exaggerating.)
 
OMG, I completely forgot about Dwayne The Rock Johnson being a former wrestler, only knew him from his movies and an Episode from Star Trek Voyager
