Flint and steel Friday

Fire practise:)
Made a birdsnest of fine curls an shavings with the Roga scandi knife.

Really like that knife.

Really like that knife.
Thanks, RoGa is the Dutch knife maker Rob van der Gaag. Not sure if he's still active. It's a WLC model (WoodLore Clone.) O1 steel, oak handles with black liners and brass corby bolts. I did a mustard patina on the blade. Great knife with a thick leather sheath.

Today was a bare minimum day. I spent the whole day driving. So I’m too beat to go full Neolithic but starting the evening fire is a chore but also my little forget-the-tech-world minute with flint and steel today..

You get a birds nest from a mailer newspaper and a wisp of jute rope I had left over.

Can you show it more open? I'd like to try making one. Oh, no need now, I saw one for sale on Amazon and they have a bunch of pics. Thanks for your time.
I would suggest making it slightly larger and use a much more supple leather. I didn’t realize how stiff it would be.

Sounds good! I'll try deer skin, unlined. After using one for awhile, how much bigger would you suggest? The bottom square size is what I'll be working from...the sides are as tall as the square is wide.

I would think about 1” larger would be perfect, especially with supple leather.

I had to share this screenshot of my granddaughter that lives in Texas. She will soon be 5 YO. On our last visit to Texas, I had her go exploring with me and taught her how to identify chert. She sent me this video saying I’m collecting flint!

hello,
@Bartoncreek jeez, would you look at the size of those sparky stones. Quick, sign your granddaughter up for the BCUSA Young Roughans.
