Having been a member of this forum now for over 15 years (Really? Where did the time go?), I have noticed many trends that have come and gone within this community. One of the most pronounced trends that I see changing regularly is that of which knife tends to have "most favored" status, aka, the knife model which appears to be the most frequently posted in images within the various threads, which I'm presuming mimic trends in which is the most desired knife at any one time.

During that 15 years, the "most favored" knife status has ranged through Woodlores (and clones), Skookum Bush Tools, Moras, Adventure Sworn Classics, and Air Force Survival Knives (aka "Bolt Knives". However, recently I've noticed a whole lot of people posting the Wenger Vigtig, which appears to be the current "in" knife to have. It does have nice lines and appears to be a good choice.

What other knives have you noticed that have risen to the level of "most favored" knife on this forum?

I would say all forum vendors / hobbyists that are making consistent models have always been ‘in’.

Over the last decade I’ve noticed BCUSA members really support the makers here. These knives are always the most frequently displayed and most are rarely seen on the trade blanket… and if they are, it’s gone within minutes.

That to me has been an indicator of what’s in on the forum.

The crowds are fickle.

When I joined the Nessmuk fad was fading, but it helped launch the knifemaking career of Andy Roy.

Kepharts had a resurgence for a while, and Tracker knives were THE knife to have for a time.

At one point you weren’t in the in crowd if you didn’t have a Turley and working on your hardwoodsman tab.

There were miscellaneous makers over the years. Many were great makers but poor businessmen.

Condor was popular for a while. Classic designs for relatively cheap.

Im the last guy to ask that question to lol. Pusjncomes to shove my go to knives is still the same go to as when I found my way here 15 years ago, heck I’m also still going with the same edc as then. I have found others I really enjoy but always seem to find my way back to those same few.

That said, if the trackers, Kepharts and wood lore style have always been popular here. I’ve noticed the Wenger love growing and it seems rightfully so, I have been tossing around the idea of an MSK or his larger version of that model. Another one I’ve seen come back to popularity is loveless and classic American style hunters. As seen made by our own @DeadStandingPine.

Don’t forget the Turleys…Iz deserves credit for a long list of favorites!

I am on the Wenger bandwagon…after 15 yrs of knives on BCUSA, and trying many of the fine makers mentioned, the Wenger Bush Pilot was everything I needed and nothing I didn’t. This is typical of all Dave’s knives including those collaborations with Boker. I have kept a couple puukko knives I like because of the unique style and quality, but most all else have been passed to new owners. Dave’s knives will be my last “turning”. Then they will be my son’s. Along with a couple puukko knives…

I think it’s just the ebbs and flows regarding knife maker/style here on BCUSA in present day.

We are extremely fortunate to have the ability to buy some extraordinary well made knives here on this forum, used or new, and most of them get shipped to the new owner here in the USA buy the seller, also in the USA.

As a result, a lot of people want the opportunity to simply try new knife designs out, me included.

I still like SET blades the most, but I am always willing to try out a knife made by a different maker if the design looks like it will fit my personal needs.

Sometimes, I will see a knife that I have absolutely no practical need for and it just looks really impressive to me, thus I roll the dice, buy it(with in reason) and see how I like it. If I like it, I usually will keep it, if not, I will sell it and usually get 70% or more of my purchase price back, but definitely not always. It is a gambling price I am willing to pay for my life long fondness of knives.

I guess it flashes pretty fast sometimes. Don't forget about the Eldris. That was hot for awhile. And the Jordan Danz coyote.

It seems like someone will buy a knife and really like it. Then they post a bunch of action shots. Then others look at it and think if they get one that they will be able to adventure too. Some do. Some don't. Then the blanket gets flooded with them.

I don't know about trends and I'm sometimes tempted by nice looking knives I see on the internet but...during the time in my life when I did the most hunting, fishing and camping I carried a filet knife and a folding pocket knife. At some point fairly early on I decided to add a fixed blade belt knife. I think it was when I started deer hunting, which I wasn't doing in the beginning. Everything else I've purchased is really just toys to play with. LOL

Ah...knife trends! I've fallen victim to most of them!

I can remember the early days of Adventure Sworn knife drops! GONE in seconds!

Then there was the Turley heyday. Silly frenzy...but fun to watch! If you weren't a Hardwoodsman in training and part of the Cool Knife Bros...you weren't poop! LOL

Wilderness Spirit was a frenzy period as well. SET before the Big Debacle and unraveling!

Beck, Gossman, Seedy, and Skookums have had their share of ebbs and flows. I've fallen for many during the heavy trend times.

I see that Wengers are hot now. I am lucky not to have been bitten....yet.

I enjoyed the fun, camaraderie, and rush, jumping on the trends and feeding frenzy! Sadly.....there are too many liars, cheats, and tire kickers around here now. They have taken all of the fun out of it for me.

Good times......sad to see them go!

interesting question. I don't think I ever noticed 'trends' in knife posts though. I also never fell into the cult trap that got so many of us hooked into spending big bucks on knives that never were that good. It was hilarious watching folks snap up a designer knife and then the day after it arrived, putting it up for sale at a double the price mark up.

I’ve noticed many people like and carry SAK’s and Puukko’s I like and have both I use regularly. The only custom knife I’ve got is one I made myself back in the early 80’s when working at a machine shop. Never had a custom made one from a maker as the store bought and good pawn shop knives have worked for everything I’ve ever needed and at half the price or better. I just can’t imagine paying that much for something that works no better than a good factory knife with proper steel and heat treat kept sharp and in condition. Sorry to all the excellent makers here who make awesome stuff, it’s just too dang expensive for me and I’m not a poor person. Just a thrifty shopper. Speaking of thrifty, Opinel makes a fine folding knife and I’ve got many of different sizes for different uses.

Angler Knives - Dorado etc. Sorry to be that guy but I never got it. These small simple knives gets sold for hundred of dollars and seems to have an avid following who constantly rave about them.
I never owned one hence might not 'get it' but the knives seem unappealing to me - at least at that price point.
They dont seem like much of a bushcraft knife and further more, that kind of money gets you a whole lot of bushcraft fixed blades from other companies.
IMO emperors new clothes but I might be barking up the wrong tree.

I think most of the custom knifemakers on this forum now the wait list is not too long and posted knives for sale might last for days before someone buys them. Maybe money is in short supply for people or more likely most of us have too many knives already. I got an email from Adventure Sworn about a knife drop of 8 knives last night at 11pm. This morning there were still three knives left. I know he had some problems with keeping up with demand before which seems to be over now. I think I had to wait a year for one of his knives when I bought it years ago. The Turley took 4 years. I would rather get a knife I can get sent immediately these days by buying used or posted by the maker as available. I don't really follow trends anymore, just if the knife appeals to me and if it might be better than what I already have.

It really is all about the adventure, isn't it? Few things motivate quite as much as that anticipation.

There's been a lot of good posts about knives so far. How did I forget Trackers??!!

I have to admit, the only frenzy that I can recall participating in was when the BRKT Bravo 1 hit the market. But, I still have it. And, with recent goings on, I guess that it's now a collector's piece (except for all the scratches and mods that I've done to it).

If you really have to ask, dead standing pine, rwfred, bartoncreek, et al ...
No, I asked how “you” define it. Specifically, details of how a “hand made” knife is made and what differentiates it from a non-hand made knife… I know how I define it.

so if you know how to define it, why is it necessary for someone else to define it?
Because he made the comment about Wenger blades being too costly if they are not hand made. I’m simply asking him to explain what he means by “hand made” to understand if they are too costly, in his opinion. I’ve heard different opinions on what exactly a hand made knife is and I want to know his, to clarify his comment. Understand?

Snip-

I was on the Bravo 1 bandwagon too, my standard demo was batoning it through a 2x8. It's still intact, evidently it's not the Chinesium steel. 😂

I'm sure all those makers mentioned make fine knives but I'm pretty certain that I'm never going to even be tempted to spend north of $400 on a knife. At this stage of my life, I could if I wanted to but I don't want to. I'm probably too old to take on the lead time of those skookum knives.

You know what I would spend some money on? Some place sort of convenient to use the knives that I have. I am what some would describe as..."all dressed up with nowhere to go" LOL.

If you're willing to relocate to Washington, I know where you can buy 20 acres of forest land. Lol
