As promised, here are some photos of the first real use of my Elk River Hunter.

Me and my son’s beagle puppy decided to spend some time down by the creek this afternoon to open up spring break.

I used a saw to separate a downed tree and then used Wolf Valley Forge hatchet to begin wood processing. I’m not too keen on using a knife as baton if I can help it, but I did try it on one log and the Elk River Hunter did not disappoint! It split through the grain like hot butter.

I used the knife to create some feather shavings and used that along with some dry leaves as the tender for my log cabin fire lay. Ignition was effortless and we were off and running with a peaceful fire down on the creek. The grip of the handle is perfect! No hot spots and it fills the hand very well! Not too thin, and not too thick. The ergonomics surpassed my expectationto be honest.

I’m very satisfied and content with this blade. I imagine it will become my exclusive camping/hunting blade for years to come and after I’m gone I’m sure my son or grandchildren will obtain many years with it as well. I believe the quality is that good!

Wish I had brought a little coffee along now.

Been meaning to put this up for a while. This is Lucas’s Vintage Kephart Supreme. It’s his attempt at a more accurate reconstruction of the original Colclessor version. It has a tapered tang and is double convexed with walnut scales. A very light and nimble knife. Haven’t gotten to use it yet but I’ll get there.

Love that tapered tang. Can that be requested on any of his knives? If so, I will be requesting that on my two orders.

Man, that is sweet! I now have an itch to place an order for a Kephart.

So is there a purpose for the tapered tang like helping with balance or something? Or is it mostly for looks?

Would it affect strength towards the back half of the handle at all?

I like the looks of it but never really heard of our saw a tapered tang before...

Basically weight and balance. Any weakness you would theoretically have is compensated for by the handle slabs.

I added some ranger bands to my other knife in hopes of providing a little extra thickness. Grip feels enhanced, but I am afraid it might stretch out the leather sheath now.

Might just remove the bands. It’s not like the handle is *too* thin, but just a hair more thickness would be nice.

I like the Powder River very much. This one in desert Ironwood. I feel sort of lucky to have come across Lucas Bullington’s work. The PR to me has everything I want… size, shape, quality blade steel, and vintage appeal. Feels very nice in hand.

You could try some grip tape.

That Powder River really looks great. I recall drooling over those a couple of years ago.
