MACV SOG

Hmm. I have been having a hard time trying to keep from buying one of those. Awesome blade.
For me.... it started in the 80s when I bought the stainless steel version of this knife from SOG, the Trident. I had and used that knife for many years, I beed blasted it to get rid of all the shiny polished finish off and make it more tactical and subdued. Young kid I knew at the time was joining the Airforce . He loved that thing and wanted to buy it off of me, so I sold it to him for a good price. Years later I decided I wanted that knife again but in the carbon steel version which SOG no longer makes. I do not like the new coated version in AUS 8. I did find a knife maker that would make one for me around 400 $... the originals from the 80s in SK5 go from 600 $ up..this came up for less than 300 in 3V

The Bark River in 3V is probably the best copy of that knife to date.

cant understand why its not dishwasher safe
LOL. If I recall, many years ago some putz did put their BR knife in a dishwasher and ruined the scales, which BR replaced for free. The putz claimed they didn't warn him he couldn't put the knife in the dishwasher and hence that sticker was created to forever pay homage to that moron.

I fell in love with the MACV-SOG design back when I first saw it in the '80s, when SOG knives started creating their repro of the original 'Nam-era model.

The one you (OP) posted is a collaboration between BR and Vehement, they were made in 3V. I have one, too, though my stacked leather handle is black instead of natural. I also have the "recondo" version with natural stacked leather. The "interesting trivia" about those BR knives, though, is they are the first versions that were 100% produced in the USA; even the 'Nam originals were made in Japan.

Here's my SOG collection, I'm recycling pics I took for older posts. Far left is an original Seki (Japan) SOG Tigershark, which is based on the MACV design. Next is an original Seki SOG S1; they're currently still made in Taiwan (as the 2.0) but an older Japan-made one like this is hard to find and costs a pretty penny. Then a "Super SOG", modern Taiwan manufacture. Then the "tech" version, also from Taiwan. Finally the two BR models; the BR/Vehement MACV-SOG I consider one of my "landed" grails...

God help us...
In his defense, it did come with a heavy coat of oil on it....so that was my first thought. Ill just run it through on the light cycle....

Although the sheath is not bad, I'm going to go with the more traditional original style sheath. Does anybody have a good line on one, or one they may be willing to part with?
I do know a knife maker that does a great copy of this knife and sheath, so I can always go to him. Just exploring for options.

WOW love that Collection of knives

I was caretaker of a pair of 35th anniversary MACV/SOG dedication knives contracted by ben baker. I say caretaker because I was gifted them and then I gave them to a vietnam vet who was a SOG man himself a few months before he died. He was part of the QRF for the son-tay raid but never launched as well.

Anyway a while back before I gave them to the man I went down the rabbit hole of finding out at much as I could about the SOG knives. Here is the thread to what I found out.

Do I miss the knives? Absolutely. Do I regret giving them to him? Not even once.

macv sog vs recondo version : your thoughts ?

macv sog vs recondo version : your thoughts ?

I like the original much better.

The recondo, I don't like its tip. That's my biggest criticism. It's an interesting design that does provide point reinforcement but, IIRC, there's some question on its provenance. As in, there were so few original examples, it's not definitively known if it was a designed improvement or if it was an incidental mod after a more traditional pointy tip snapped off. My guess would be the latter, but what do I know.

I mean, it's a nice knife and the BR version is CPM-154, which may be my favorite stainless PM steel. But if I could only choose one, it'd be the original without a second thought. That's just my personal opinion, though - I haven't done side-by-side performance test comparisons.

How about some more eye candy?

Of course, the 'Nam-era originals were unmarked so they wouldn't be traceable back to a country of origin (as well as any deceased they were found on). But the Seki '80s version, both a repro and an homage, had markings. Again, these original Sekis were discontinued some time ago and are hard/expensive to find now; my understanding is the current Taiwan 2.0 model does not have the same markings.

Here's what the markings look like...

Childhood dream knife there! One I haven’t outgrown either lol. For anyone interested, John striker Meyer (SOG guy) and “the Frenchman” have done a handful of podcasts with Jocko talking about their experiences in SOG. Absolutely mind blowing bravery and tenacity.
