I've got a 5-gallon bucket in the van, with a seat, ready to be used as a toilet. Mostly for poop, as I can pee behind a tree, or into an orange juice bottle if I don't want to leave the van. It seems like such a waste (ha!) to use an 8-13-gallon bag in the toilet just for one poop. I see that Hefty makes a 4-gallon bag for small waste cans, I doubt if they can be stretched across the opening of the bucket to be useable, butt (ha! x 2), I would much rather use a smaller bag.

Any suggestions/ideas? Poop in the big bag & cover it with litter & resuse later? I'd hate to be driving around with a bucket full of stinky poop!

If I had better aim, I could use a dog poop bag- maybe put handles on the inside of the bucket to stretch the bag open? Thinking out loud, here.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I sort of went through this a month or so ago. My water pipe between the meter and house developed a leak. I had to cut the water off and did not have running water for like a month.

In my case I cut plastic sheets from a large contractor's size trash bag and I put one at a time inside of the toilet that I used the plunger to make the water level low in.

What is important is I covered the poo with cat litter. It does the smell control just as it does for a cat, but the job is bigger. That way I got more than one poo out of the pistic and sometimes 3.

However, inside of a hot van you likely need to cover the bucket.

I think sand would also work instead of the cat litter.

I think I have seen ads where they sell the lids for the 5-gal buckets and also the bags. But it is likely cheaper to buy the bags local.

I spent the last half hour trying to find a video by Blackie Thomas about how he does this. I know he uses clumping kitty litter, but I forget what bags he uses

The Reliance brand camping toilets are not at all expensive, their double bags have a (somewhat) deodorizer powder. The lid is fairly tight fitting.
That gives me an idea, to just get a smaller bucket to put inside the larger one, that way I don't have to use such big bags. Maybe buy some separate deodorizer.

Look at composting toilets made from same set up......
My Mrs. Keys made one to try, years back....I joked and teased, until I tried it....composting toilets are the cleanest, way to go.....

No bags, so mess... ZERO Smell...just saw dust or dirt like substance.....we use coconut coir...it is compacted and absorbs everything....

What the heck do you do with the bags of sewage? Be honest....

I would love a composting toilet, but I wouldn't use the toilet enough to justify the cost. I may get a brick of the coir, though.

All you add to your 5 gal bucket is a funnel and urine jug.....just stuff from dollar store.....

When the urine and poopy mix, that is where you get sewage....so if you can not go #1 in the bucket it is okay....but slip ups happen, lol
(I still can't talk bathroom stuff without smiling,) I will look and see if we still have the 5 gal bucket set up....as I bought (for prepping) one for every member of household, in case of emergency....See Getting rid of #2 is as important as anything guess.

Found it! it was in the barn....( I wonder why I keep these things....that is another question.)

White part is a plastic funnel, tube fits on it....goes outside bucket to plastic bottle that sits on ground....Works for both boys and girls, if you are sitting.....

Start with bottom of bucket covered with the filler, go #2 in that then sprinkle more filler over said #2......

This is the type we tried before buying one.

10+ years back I got a bucket that's the same diameter as the standard 5-gallon bucket, and has the same exact rim. It's about 5 inches shorter. It takes the same toilet seat lid too.

It came with us on several road trips, along with several large bags. Single- use-and-toss.

I've been using a 5 gallon bucket with the luggable loo seat/lid bought from Walmart for many years now.
I use 8 gallon bags from a dollar store.
I put several, one inside another for insurance
I only use it when I have to, and use cedar or pine shavings as they are light and cheap and pretty much at any Walmart. How many uses depends on how often I need to use it.
As long as you don't mix #1 & #2, they really don't smell. I've gotten multiple uses from a single bag, just throw the shavings on top and close the lid. Absolutely no smell.
When ready pull one or two bags out, tie up, and throw it in a dumpster. Just like you would a baby diaper.
I also use a one gallon wide mouth bottle with Camco TST Max, a tablespoon or so and there's never an oder.
That's also very easy to dispose of.
I've been where I'm at now since June of 25, and it's really not a problem.
There's a bathroom with shower, but it's only available from 8 to 5.
I do live alone in a small, self built camper trailer based on a 16 foot enclosed twin axle.

You beat me to it.
That's pretty much my setup, I just don't use a funnel as I didn't want to put a hole in my bucket.

What I like best about the Reliance bags is that it’s a lawn/leaf weight bag that rolls down into an even stouter ziplock. Pretty safe disposal, no big deal if we get home a couple days before trash day.

We use them almost exclusively for #2, and sprinkle a layer of dirt on top as good manners.

Honestly, I’ve picked up and carried so much dog doo over the years on our walks, I doubt I’m especially ‘sensitive’ to any poo routine (pootine?) ;-)

Last year I bought a Camco bucket and seat that I've not used yet, along with some heavy contractor bags and a gelling agent recommended from a video on the subject.

Actually the gel recommended is no longer made but I picked this one based on reviews from Amazon. And while oversized I'm not trusting standard trash bags for this, I'll spend the extra coin.
I'll probably pre-fit some of the bags and trim off the excess to make a better fit.

Video that I followed:

You can get biodegradble - compostable bags that fit a 5 gal bucket. They can be trashed, buried, or thrown into a pit toilet.

I'm cheap but not cheap enough to keep a sack of crap around long enough to use it twice.

For the really clean experience....this separates very nicely....that is the key. The hose hole is tight around hose and in bottle....
Never a leak or overflow.....I think Mrs keys found plans on the net somewhere....I teased her to no end .....But it wasn't long until I saw benefits.

I bought the prep ones off Amazon, they are contained with separator and leak proof containers inside....very tidy, can be put into camper or van very easily. They are Boxio brand....easy to dump. and they use a biodegradable bag in the #2 compartment....

Sure beats the old "Thunder-Mugs" of days gone by.
