I was camping and I had internet. I was so bored I looked at my phone. I saw a few videos showing how to make Stollen. a German Holiday bread. distant cousin to fruitcake, IMHO.

my next door neighbor is 96 years old. she gives us neighbors some Stollen every Christmas. she looks forward to it and it make her feel good. well, she tried this year, but fell asleep and burned it all. she was so sad.

so I thought, "hey didnt I see a Stollen video?!". I called a few co workers that have family that makes it and got all sorts of intel. almond paste vs marzipan, etc. I watched a few videos. one friends grandma told me I didnt need a stand mixer...,every thing I saw seemed to indicate I did.

I went for it with a big wooden spoon. I wanted to present Helen with a Stollen made especially for her.

it came out delicious!!! I made two so I could test one before gifting her one. 1st, I never knew a Stollen has almost paste filling. hers didnt.

well, I showed up and she was happy to see me. I made her hold the door to be steady, and close her eyes. (I stayed close and held her elbow). I pulled the stollen out from behind me..."open your eyes.."

she started crying!! she said no one has ever made her one. the first Stollen gifted to her!! she exclaimed, "its beautiful"...we hugged and she cried. I think she misses her family..

I hope she likes it.. it's been radio silence since. :D
