Very Small Daypack?

You might search through ‘vintage’ daypacks on EBay. Old Kelty, North Face, etc. Apparently, we didn’t have to take nearly as much crap on a short hike BITD…
I recently ‘rediscovered’ one of my 70s packs, and use it similarly to what you describe. ;-)

My original suggestion, was going to be a water bottle bag, but you said no sling bags so nix that. My 2nd thought was already posted, a hydration pack. They vary in sizes for the bag and for how much water the bladder holds. It will eliminate the need to carry water bottles.
my only other thought would be a chest rig
I was given this in a different color form my Secret Santa this past year. The bags can be individually removed by unzipping them from the chest rig.
