Vintage 70’s Mora Skinner Modification

I hope that with some light oil, that wood grain will really pop. The blade is great steel too, it tossed wonderful sparks off the belt when I touched it up.

What do you think? should I remove all the patina from the blade and make it "clean", or leave it looking well used? I'm not yet decided....

Thanks all. Looking forward to some more relaxing time in the shop this weekend.

I know that it's not ideal that it's a partial tang, that is not going to be centered in the handle slabs, but with a few 11/64 solid pins, some good epoxy and these 35 year old maple slabs, it should hold up to at least some solid use.

I find that I rarely baton with my knives anyways, other than making the odd bird beak notch. I am somewhat concerned, though how the pins will look once I shape the handle slabs. I’m trying to shape the slabs to resemble an Andal handle, but that is going to be quite thin. It’s highly likely that this will become my knife skills teaching blade, so I’ll be relegated to only classroom use… On the other hand if I like it, maybe I’ll use it every day!

Today’s small progress. It was a busy “Dad Day”

I cut out the slabs on my bandsaw, after lightly glueing them together with crazy glue. And then I did a dry fit up while they were still glued together to see how the blade fit in, and I also trimmed off some of the tang with the belt sander.

Then I separated the slabs again and reassembled everything in reverse order again with a little bit of glue.

Then I drilled my pin holes and roughed up the pins, a little bit with a file to make sure they have lots of surface area to hold the epoxy.

One final fit up for tonight and tomorrow I hope to epoxy everything together. (Maybe I’ll polish the blade first, I’m still not sure what I’m going to do there ??)
